The new me will be all about me

It’ll be a new year but will it be a new you? That’s always the dilemma between Christmas and New Year’s Day: What can I possibly find wrong with myself to change?

We know the whole resolution thing lasts for all of a day because we can’t give up the sweets and working out isn’t fun and blah, blah, blah. Right?

What do I plan to do in 2017? Well, be selfish, according to one of my friends.

All year I tend to fuss about how other people are doing and how I can be of assistance. There’s nothing wrong with that, I know, but it often takes away from me having “me” time.

My plan this year? I plan to be selfish. I plan to lose the guilt about being there for myself first.

You’ve probably felt the same way: you’re tired, had a busy day but feel obligated to keep your word to somebody because that seems to be the right thing to do. In actuality you want to rest your mind and body and have some alone time. Maybe it means watching TV or having a nap, it should be OK to do that.

I’m not vowing to become a recluse. Don’t get me wrong. I just think it is time I focus on myself first.

In 2016, there was a lot of illness for people around me. Funeral eulogies always make you reflect on yourself as a human being. We hear “he was selfless” and “she was always there for me.” I’m certain people will say that for me, but they will also include “he was a hard worker and should have taken more time for himself.”

So to make those people happy before I die, I am going to do just that. (For the record, I have no intention of dying anytime soon.)

I am marking on my calendar that 2017 is the year of me! Take a moment and think about your schedule and your life and see if you want to join in my crusade.
