Honeypot is sweet

WAINWRIGHT, Alberta — The little town of Wainwright has a big secret that is better left said. The Honeypot Eatery & Pub has everything you need to get that small town charm from a restaurant.

Just a brief walk from the apartment I was staying at, the Honeypot was the choice of my brother who lived in Wainwright. We went there for a birthday dinner and ended up going three times in total during my four day visit.

I decided on a caesar salad (one of my favourites) and a chicken burger. The server warned us that something had gone terribly wrong when making the caesar dressing and it’s quite “powerful” and garlicy. All of us diners at the table were Ukrainain so we took that as a challenge to see if we could handle it. The server said that since she warned us it was pretty garlicy that we wouldn’t be able to complain about it or have it taken off the bill later on. Still undeterred all of us decided to give it a go. I actually got pretty exciting because I have yet to find something too garlicy on any menu in any restaurant (yes, THAT is a challenge, restaurant owners!)

As the salads began arriving I nearly began giggling like a school girl. It was the moment I had been waiting for after the “warning” from the server. And after a few tastes of the salad when the server came to check on us, she couldn’t believe that we all loved it and we couldn’t believe the staff found it to be a kitchen disaster. When the salad was done I wanted another one.

But the chicken burger soon arrived. And even if it had taken a long time for the food to arrive, the old newspapers and other decorations on the wall were enough to keep us talking and distracted. However, it didn’t seem to be a terribly long wait for the main course at all.

The chicken burger was huge. I couldn’t believe that the restaurant had two big whammies up its sleeve. First with the excellent salad and now this huge, tasty burger. I couldn’t believe it was such a great meal.

Many people say that sometimes the small restaurants in small towns have the best menus because it is all homecooking and the Honeypot couldn’t be a better example.
