This is part of an e-mail that was sent to SpeakFree from a reader responding to the website’s call for depression stories:
“I stopped by your site a couple weeks ago and read what parents had to say about bullying. I disagree with what the parents said. Many of them blamed kids for contributing to their child’s depression, but I think those parents need insight into how a child feels when growing up at home with bullies for parents. I truly believe that the negative attitudes at home are what prompted my bout with depression a few years ago.”
After reading this, JB replied to the e-mail at Josh’s (not his real name) request to hear his story. The two had a long phone conversation and 17-year-old Josh said he wanted to tell the SpeakFree readers his story about how he feels when there is too much negativity at home.
Josh’s story flooded the SpeakFree NewsDesk with many messages of support and advice, and also praise for how he has dealt with the situation. The story prompted another SpeakFree Series to begin. Each week new responses will be added to the site.
EXCERPT: A LOOK AT DEPRESSION... THROUGH A TEEN’S EYES
“Soon the true emotions I was feeling were too tough to handle and I started to become physically sick over the fear of getting in trouble and not being supported by my parents. It was that time, two years ago, when my panic attacks started and I ended up in the hospital emergency room three times. I was shaking uncontrollably, getting chills and almost feeling like I was having some sort of heart attack or seizure. My parents knew nothing about what was happening because I would call one of my friends (she also previously suffered with anxiety/depression) to take me to the hospital.”
